Senior actor Anupam Kher, who has appeared in over 500 films, recently discussed his absence from mainstream Hindi films. Despite the success of The Kashmir Files and his most recent release, Karthikeya 2, Anupam said he has stopped receiving offers from major studios run by Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra, and Sajid Nadiadwala. He’ll next be seen in Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai.
Anupam Kher appeared in several hit films produced by Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and Veer Zaaara. Anupam recalled how, in the past, he was their ‘darling,’ but that things had changed for unknown reasons.
Anupam stated in an interview, “I am not a part of mainstream cinema in India today.” I’m not. I’m not doing any Karan Johar or Sajid Nadiadwala films, and I’m not doing any Aditya Chopra films because no offers have come in. All of these people adored me. I’ve completed everyone’s films. But I’m not blaming them for no longer casting me. But because they weren’t casting me in their films, I pursued other opportunities, including a Tamil film called Connect and a Telugu film called Tiger Nageswara Rao. I’ve also performed Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai.”
“Otherwise I could have sat down and said, ‘Arey yaar mere dost aur mere jo itne kareebi they ek zamaane mein, mujhe ab lete nahin hain filmon mein toh main ab kya karoon main toh barbaad ho gaya (Who were once my friends are now ignoring me and not offering films).” Of course, mujhe takleef hoti hai, dukh hoti hai ki kyun nahin lete bhai main toh inki sab filmon mein kaam karta tha. But it’s not a complaint, and I’m not holding it against them. I’m just saying that when one door closes, many other windows and doors open).”
Anupam Kher’s next appearance will be in Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming period drama Emergency. He plays Jaya Prakash Narayan in the film, while Kangana plays Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In addition, he has Shiv Shastri Balboa and Uunchai.
