The long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster Avatar, Avatar The Way of Water, is about to hit theatres. Avatar 2, one of the most eagerly anticipated films in recent memory, is expected to break box office records. The producers have already stated that three more films in the franchise are in the works. However, director James Cameron recently stated that the success of Part 2 will determine the franchise’s future.
Avatar was released in 2009 and became the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing over $2.9 billion worldwide. Director James Cameron announced the sequels in 2011. In 2017, he stated that the writing for four sequels had been completed, and that filming for The Way of Water would begin later that year.
“The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘Okay, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,’ if it’s just not profitable,” the director said in a recent interview with Total Film Magazine. Even now, we live in a different world than when I wrote this. The pandemic and streaming are a one-two punch. Alternatively, we could remind people what going to the theatre is all about. That is exactly what this film does. The question is, “How many people care now?”
Parts of Avatar 3 and 4 had already been shot, according to the film’s producer, John Landau. “We finished most of the first act of Avatar 4, which was necessary for logistical reasons.” “We’ve designed the majority of the movie for Avatar 4, but we haven’t actually filmed it all – only the first act,” he told Variety.
Avatar The Way of Water reunites Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver from the first film, while also introducing Kate Winslet. The film will be released worldwide on December 16, 2022.
