Jaya Bachchan, a veteran actor, revealed that her husband-actor Amitabh Bachchan told her before their wedding that he didn’t ‘want a wife who will be (working) 9-5’. Jaya also revealed why she and Amitabh Bachchan had to postpone their wedding date on the latest episode of her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast What The Hell Navya. Jaya also revealed to her fans that her father never wanted her to marry.
Navya inquired as to how Amitabh proposed to her, and she replied, “I was shooting in Calcutta, and we had decided to take a vacation if one of our films was a success. Zanjeer. The film was a success. I was in Calcutta filming a movie when Nana (grandpa) called and said, ‘There’s a problem.’ We had decided to marry in October because my workload would be reduced by then. ‘I definitely don’t want a wife who will work 9-5,’ he said. Please, please, please work, but not every day. You pick your projects and work with the right people.'”
She went on, “Okay, I said. He then called me and said, ‘My parents say you can’t go on vacation with Jaya; if you want to go on vacation with her, you marry her.’ ‘What do you think?’ he asked. ‘Well, we were planning to get married in October, so it’s fine, we’ll do it in June,’ I explained. Khatam (the conclusion).”
“‘But you’ll have to talk to my parents,’ I said. He called and spoke with my father. My father was not pleased; he had never wanted me to marry. Our family consisted of three sisters. ‘I did not bring you into this world to just educate yourself, get married, settle down, and have children,’ he said. ‘I want you all to do something with your lives.’ That person was my father. And then he said to my father, ‘That’s fine.’ We don’t want a big ceremony. My parents are still alive, and I want them to come.’ “Jaya elaborated. She described her wedding to Amitabh as a “quite wedding” at her godmother’s home in Mumbai.
Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan married in 1973. They had two children, Shweta Bachchan (1974) and Abhishek Bachchan (actor) (1976). Jaya began her acting career as an adult with Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi (1971).
She and Amitabh appeared in several films together, including Zanjeer and Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke, Mili and Sholay (1975), Silsila (1981), and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (1983). (2001). Jaya will next be seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The film will be released in 2023 and will also star Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, and Shabana Azmi.
