Michelle Yeoh posted on Instagram and then deleted it after receiving backlash.

Michelle Yeoh was chastised after posting an article on Instagram about the lack of diversity in the Best Actress category at the Oscars, which also mentioned another nominee, Cate Blanchett.

Michelle Yeoh, an actress, has deleted an Instagram post that highlighted an article about the Best Actress in a Leading Role race at the Oscars, which may have violated Academy rules. The Malaysian actor, who has been nominated for her performance in the multiverse-spanning Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, is the frontrunner in the category to win, which could be historic because it would make Michelle the Academy’s first Asian actor to win the award in its nearly 100-year history.

Michelle shared screenshots of a Vogue article written by Radhika Seth titled “It’s Been Over Two Decades Since We’ve Had a Non-White Best Actress Winner” just hours before the Oscars voting closed on March 7. “Will That Be Different in 2023?” which highlighted the lack of diversity in the category, with only one woman of colour winning in the category for Halle Berry’s Monster’s Ball in 2001, and Michelle’s historic Screen Actors Guild win, which could pave the way for an Academy win.

Cate Blanchett, who is nominated for her performance in Tar, is Michelle Yeoh’s main competition in the Best Actress category going into the Oscars on March 13. Cate has received the majority of the critics’ circle awards, as well as the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and BAFTA.

The article, whose screenshots Michelle highlighted on Instagram, also mentioned the possibility of Cate’s victory, but it received harsh criticism from users online. “Detractors will argue that Blanchett’s performance is superior—the acting veteran is undeniably incredible as prolific conductor Lydia TĂĄr—but it should be noted that she already has two Oscars.”

A third would perhaps confirm her status as an industry titan, but given her extensive and unparalleled body of work, do we really need any more? Meanwhile, an Oscar would change Yeoh’s life: “her name would forever be preceded by the phrase ‘Academy Award winner,’ and it should result in her getting meatier parts, after a decade of being criminally underutilised in Hollywood,” according to the article.

Michelle deleted the post shortly after, after receiving a lot of backlash online for targeting the other nominee, Cate Blanchett, in her post. It could also have violated one of the Academy’s rules. Part B of The Academy’s rule states in no. 11, “References to Other Nominees,” that “any tactic that singles out ‘the competition’ by name or titles is expressly forbidden.”

Michelle Yeoh made history by becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win the SAG award for acting in the film Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.

Michelle Yeoh made history on Sunday night at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win the individual acting award for her performance in Everything, Everything, Everywhere.

The actress, who was nominated alongside Cate Blanchett for Tar, Viola Davis for The Woman King, Danielle Deadwyler for Till, and Ana de Armas for Blonde, won for her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in Everything, Everything, Everywhere. Accepting the award from presenter Jeff Bridges, the 60-year-old actor was overcome with emotion and dropped an F-bomb during her speech.

The Malaysian actor, who received her first Academy Award nomination for her role in the film, stated, “My heart might explode if I speak. To get this from you, SAG-AFTRA, who understand what it takes to get here, each of you knows the journey, the roller coaster ride, the ups and downs, but most importantly, we never give up. I appreciate your love and support because I know I’m up against titans. S—-! F—-! Wow! Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. This isn’t just for me; it’s for every little girl who resembles me.”

During her acceptance speech, Michelle also thanked Sally Field, who received the SAG Life Achievement Award, and said, “You said everything right because we are here because we love what we do and we will never stop doing it because we love it so much. Thank you for giving me a seat at the table, which so many of us require. We want to be seen and heard, and you’ve shown us tonight that it’s possible, for which I’m grateful. And my mother will be eternally grateful!”
